Nintendo sold more games last year than ever before

Nintendo has announced that it sold 235 million Switch games in fiscal 2021 — the highest number sold in a single year in the company’s history.

In its fiscal 2021 earnings report, the company said software sales — for both first-party and third-party games — grew 1.8% year over year to 235.07 million units. According to Nintendo, this is “the highest annual software sales number ever released for a Nintendo platform.”

The Switch hardware itself didn’t fare quite as well by the incredibly successful console’s high standards. Combined, the three Switch models sold 23 million units in fiscal 2021. While that’s a huge number (by comparison, PS5 sold 11.5 million over the same period), it’s a 20% drop from fiscal 2020.

Nintendo apparently attributes the drop to two factors: lack of solid-state components and the lack of a game to boost hardware sales like Animal Crossing: New Horizons did for Switch in 2020.

Pokémon was a big winner for Nintendo last year, with Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl selling 14.65 million and Legends: Arceus hitting 12.64 million. Mario Party Superstars reached 6.88 million and Zelda: Skyward Sword HD reached 3.91 million. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continued its position as the Switch’s biggest game, selling nearly 10 million units nearly 5 years after launch, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons added 6 million to its total.

Nintendo Switch has now sold a total of 107.65 million units (with 822.18 million game units). This makes it the most successful Nintendo games console of all time behind the Game Boy (118.69 million) and the Nintendo DS (154.02 million).
