No injuries in thatch hut fire in Worthing

Firefighters have provided an update after a thatched cottage caught fire.

The house caught fire in Pond Lane, Worthing, around 4pm and was devastated by the blaze which took six fire engines to extinguish.

Pond Lane was closed while emergency services put out the fire.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue confirmed there were no injuries at the scene.

A spokesman added: “Please continue to avoid the Pond Lane area of ​​Durrington as we fight this house fire. Local roads are closed, causing traffic jams.

“Durrington residents are being advised to close windows and doors as heavy smoke billows from a nearby house fire.

“Please avoid the area around Pond Lane where we are currently located.”

Crews from Worthing, Lancing, East Preston, Shoreham and East Sussex crews from Brighton took part.

The fire brigade stayed into the evening to contain any sources of fire.
