‘No Irish team has ever done that and now it’s all at stake next week’ – Johnny Sexton ‘delighted’ after famous win over the All Blacks

Johnny Sexton welcomed Andy Farrell’s backroom squad amid euphoria of a first Irish victory over the All-Blacks in New Zealand.

The experienced out-half had a perfect record in the game with two conversions from Andrew Porter and three penalties during a famous 23-12 win in Dunedin before being replaced by Joey Carbery after a slip with six minutes left.

But the uneasiness he seemed to feel leaving the pitch was forgotten as he soaked up the atmosphere full-time.

“We played some great stuff early on, especially when it was 15v15. The game was stopped after that but we’re happy to get over the line,” Sexton told Sky Sports.

“No Irish team has ever done that and now it’s all at stake next week.

“We have a fantastic coaching team and they prepared us well for the game. We weren’t at our best last week and the All Blacks obviously punished us, but they put us in a really good place last week and we just had to go out there and deliver what they put together for us and we did.

“When you play the All Blacks you can never sit back. They have some excellent players who are very well trained. They are the best team in the world for a reason and we are delighted to win.”

“We have a chance to win a series here and they don’t come too often. We look forward to next week.”

An emotional Andrew Porter was left almost speechless after leaving nothing in Dunedin Square. With his two tries, one in each half, Ireland provided the platform on which to build victory.

“I’m very tired to be honest! It’s very emotional, we’re down here today to make a bit of history, but the work isn’t done yet,” he said.

“The series is tied 1-1 and all that matters now is next week.

“We will enjoy this evening, I will always remember it. I can’t say enough about the work the guys did this week to get back on their feet after the first test.

“It’s hard to put into words how I feel right now. It’s an incredible group of guys to work with who have recovered from last week and are putting on an incredible performance today.

“We had a man advantage for most of the game and need to do better next week but giving those fans something to cheer on is great.

“We made a bit of history today, but it would be even sweeter if we could make it next week.

“We take our insights and pour everything in, we have nothing to lose.”

All Black Backrower Sam Cane paid tribute to the winners in his post-game interview. “They are a quality team and they recovered strongly tonight,” said the Chiefs man.

“We made too many mistakes. I can’t question the effort and attitude, but some of our skills let us down and put them in play. They took their chances, kept the scoreboard going and then they were it.” too good tonight.”

The win tied the series one at a time and set the stage for a delicious final test at 8.05am Irish time next Saturday at Wellington’s Sky Stadium.
