The Sports Surgery Clinic (SSC), the hospital specializing in sports medicine, is seeking approval for an expansion of its operations at its Santry site, which industry sources said would be worth “tens of millions of euros” due to rising demand.
According to a planning application filed with Fingal County Council, SSC is targeting a four-story basement extension to the Santry Clinic.
In a brief statement on its plans for the expansion, SSC said increasing demand for its services has meant it has continued to grow and expand in recent years, including during the Covid pandemic when the number of core theaters and stationary Beds expanded by 40 percent.
The results for 2020 show that SSC has generated a profit before tax of almost 3.9 million euros.
“As SSC once again approaches full occupancy, it is embarking on its next planned phase of growth, seeking to expand its existing footprint (16,000m²) with an additional 11,000m² four-story addition above the basement.
“Plans have been presented to Fingal County Council for the expansion to include three new operating theatres, additional inpatient and day care beds, additional and supportive infrastructure, a new entrance and reception area, waiting areas and cafe, and an expanded basement with additional bicycle storage. and to enable car parking places,” it said.
“Since the SSC was founded in 2007, it has grown to become the largest orthopedic surgery and sports medicine hospital in Europe and this latest planning application represents the next exciting phase in its development.”
Industry sources said such an expansion by SSC would require an investment in “tens of millions of dollars.”
SSC was founded in 2007 by one of the world’s top orthopedic surgeons, Ray Moran, and also supported by his brother Kevin – a former GAA star from Ireland, Manchester United and Dublin. It has earned a reputation as a competence center for joint replacements (hip, knee, shoulder) and sports soft tissue surgery.
SSC, of which Brian Keane is Managing Director, is also known for its Sports Medicine department, which serves top athletes.
SSC’s latest results for 2020 show that it has generated a pre-tax profit of almost €3.9 million.
