No winners on the Depp v Heard show

“Nothing less than everything” is what Johnny Depp says he lost when ex-wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic abuse. He’s not wrong there, given his loss of roles in the Fantastic Beasts and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises, as well as the loss of prestige and reputation he won’t regain even if he pursues his current US defamation case against his ex wins.
But what does a Depp victory look like? Despite portraying himself in the dock as a chivalrous and mistreated Southerner, Depp isn’t coming out of this case much better than he did in last year’s failed defamation lawsuit The sun.
No matter how likable a character Depp seemed to have last week after his own and his sister’s testimony about their abusive, moody mother and dejected father, the Heard page just had to release the video of him sipping a huge helping of breakfast wine poured while he smashed down cupboard doors to cast him back into a dim light. No matter how he emphasized that he would never hurt a woman, the Heard side just had to show his actor friend Paul Bettany lyrics detailing how they should drown and burn Heard and how Depp could have sex with her corpse to him discredit.
This is all damning evidence in images and words that have surfaced along the way The sun fall, so it’s no surprise to Depp that it’s reappearing. It’s clear that just redeeming himself doesn’t count as a win for Depp. It seems he doesn’t want his reputation back so much as he wants to destroy Heard’s. It seems he’s willing to let all the drinking, drugs, fucking texts and videos go through all over again as long as Heard’s reputation falls to the same level as his.
After losing The sun In one case in the UK, one of the complaints from Depp’s legal team was the “relying of judgment on Amber Heard’s testimony” and disregard for evidence from other people of her misconduct in their short-lived marriage.
The current US case is one in which Depp claims Heard defamed him in an article she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018. He sued her for $50 million, and Heard countersued twice that amount. The headline of Heard’s article read: “I’ve Speaked Out About Sexual Violence — and Faced the Wrath of Our Culture.” That has to change.” She spoke about how by speaking up, she “became a public figure who represents domestic violence,” but didn’t name Depp as her abuser.
The article is the basis of the case. Marriage is not in court. Except that marriage is on trial.
The story of Depp and Heard could be romantically portrayed as a great passion gone wrong, but there’s nothing romantic about it. Certainly, Heard Depp’s misjudged coup de foudre appears to be midlife, a thunderbolt that struck while they were filming in 2011 The rum diary and which unfortunately led to marriage for her in 2015.
The wedding, Depp told the court, was not attended by his daughter, who disapproved. The wedding party was drugged and debauched.
Most of Heard’s friends were on MDMA. Depp said it was a waste on him that marijuana was his drug of choice, and he was rather snippy about sticking his dampened fingers in a bag of MDMA like his wife’s cronies. It was an oddly self-righteous position to be at odds with the breakfast wine, drug smoking, pills and cocaine he admitted to taking with Bettany, but that’s how Depp is running this case.
Taking the position of a noble, well-intentioned but misguided decent fellow on the stand, he characterized Heard as capable of putting away two bottles of wine a day, taunting and belittling himself, and being physically abusive. She would throw a remote control at him, Depp testified; She rammed his head with a bathroom door. She split his still malformed finger with a smashed vodka bottle, he claimed, and an audio recording played in court heard Depp say he was a bad father and whined about whether she had hit him in a row or hit him, as she said.
Will either her career or her reputation bounce back from this case?
On Friday, a nurse who had been regularly at her home testified how Heard would follow Depp even if he tried to get away from her, pinched him, tried to provoke a reaction or an argument, no matter how much he resisted . It’s easy to tell that there were two of them in it. Both say the other abused them physically and emotionally. Depp says photos of him with his injured finger show burns from Heard on his face.
She says his injuries were self-inflicted. His lawyers have described their allegations as “abuse scams.” Details of a 2013 email sent by Depp to Elton John were read out in court on Friday. If they had gone in in an effort to shatter the impression that Depp was a decent guy until he was unlucky enough to encounter Heard and her demons, this strategy might have worked.
First, Depp opened up about his mother’s poor health before sharing some good news. “On the other side of the coin,” he wrote to John, “my kids have fallen head over heels for Amber (my girl) and that pressure is off my shoulders!!! This is unlike the ‘French blackmailers (ex c***) trying to brainwash them…which I’m sure is imminent’.”
The case will continue next week, but it’s safe to say there will be no winners.
