People have been told to stay indoors in a national lockdown after North Korea declared a “severe national emergency”.

Authorities in North Korea said they had detected an outbreak of a subvariant of the highly transmissible omicron version of the coronavirus, known as BA.2, state media KCNA reported Thursday in the first official Covid infection since the pandemic.

Extreme Covid policies have been pursued since the start of the pandemic to stop the spread of the virus across the country.

It has been claimed that the country’s limited health facilities and its isolated global position have politically made leader Kim Jung-un concerned that Covid could wreak havoc.
