The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff did not say whether the projectile was ballistic or how far it traveled.

However, the Japanese prime minister’s office said it had detected a possible ballistic missile launch from North Korea.

The Japan Coast Guard issued a statement urging ships to sail around Japan’s coast in case of falling objects, but no immediate damage to ships or aircraft was reported.

Since New Year’s Day, North Korea has conducted three other tests, one with an unusual frequency.

Two of those launches involved “supersonic rockets”. capable of high speed and maneuverability after launch, while the last one, on Friday, involved a pair of short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) fired from train cars.

It was not immediately known what type of rocket was involved in Monday’s reported launch.

The launch comes after North Korea conducted a purported test flight of a hypersonic missile on January 5 and 11 – and also a ballistic missile that was test-fired from a train on Friday.

A series of launches prompted the administration of US President Joe Biden to impose its first sanctions on Pyongyang on Wednesday, while also calling on the United Nations Security Council to blacklist some. individuals and entities of North Korea.

North Korea has defended the missile tests as its sovereign right of self-defence and accused the United States of deliberately escalating the situation with new sanctions.

In recent months, North Korea has ramped up testing of new missiles designed to overwhelm missile defenses in the region.

Some experts say North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is reverting to a tried-and-true technique to pressure the United States and its neighbors in the region with missile launches and threats to too before launching negotiations to draw concessions.

Mr. Kim carried out a series of missile tests last year, including what was claimed to be a hypersonic weapon.

Some of these tests violate strict international sanctions.

The country is specifically banned by the United Nations from testing ballistic missiles as well as nuclear weapons.
