North Macedonia misses Eurovision due to energy crisis

North Macedonia will not take part in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool to save money on electricity bills, the country’s state broadcaster has announced.

The decision is in the public’s best interest given the increased costs due to the energy crisis, which are taking a large chunk of the public services budget,” MRT said in a message published on its website.

The savings would come from not paying the registration fee, which was expected to be higher than the €39,000 (£34,000) collected last year.

It is the first time since its independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991 that North Macedonia will not take part in the televised event.

The European Broadcasting Union, an association of public service broadcasters in Europe, oversees the annual competition.
