Greg Norman, head for the proposed Super Golf League (SGL), said the Saudi-backed competition is kicking off and will announce the first events later on Wednesday.

In this letter to the players published by sports website SI.com, the Australian said the league would move forward even if it started on a small scale.

“You should know that we are kicking off and we will continue to push this vision forward,” said the former world number one.

“We won’t stop. We believe in our mission and will announce our first events (Wednesday).”

The proposed tournament has enjoyed huge success in recent weeks as some of the game’s best players have pledged allegiance to the PGA Tour, including four-time Ireland champion Rory McIlroy, who said they were “dead in the water”.

Norman, a World Golf Hall of Fame member who has won two British Open titles out of his 20 PGA Tour wins, is leading SGL as CEO of LIV Golf Investments , backed by the Saudi Arabia Investment Fund.

“We consider ourselves a startup,” he said in the letter.

“We can start with a modest number of players, but we won’t stay that long.

“I fully understand some players may choose not to play with us right away. But after we start, I believe many of those who are not with us now will stay with us. me later.

“I want to thank you for your patience, but know it will be well worth it for you.”

No golfer has publicly admitted to signing up for the SGL despite promises of hefty salaries, although some have expressed interest, including former Australian world number one Adam Scott.

SGL’s image has been tarnished by comments made by six-time US champion Phil Mickelson about Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and using the tournament to gain leverage in the PGA. Tour.

Mickelson later apologized after his comments drew widespread criticism and said he would be taking time off from golf to “reflect on himself”.
