MMORPG: Thank you for taking the time to speak to us today, space punks Open Beta is almost here. Is the team looking forward to what’s to come?

Bartek: Yes, we are super excited. I think everyone on the team is particularly excited as the closed beta test went better than we expected. We look forward to testing the old and newer stuff with a much larger group of players as well.

MMORPG: Will this large-scale test be the focus of the next round of testing?

Bartek: It will be one of the points, but we also want to let you know and check if our game system is fun. For example, we want to test whether our new crafting systems work as intended and whether the feedback is positive. There are a number of other things we would like feedback on, but scaling is one of the most important.

MMORPG: I suppose it also gives you the opportunity to bring a variety of player types into play. Everyone who has played so far is convinced of the idea?

Bartek: Yes. I think that’s important because we kind of know what our core fanbase is feeling and how they’re playing. These are the people who will stay with us during the closed beta. Now it’s getting wider. The other significant difference is that the closed beta was kind of exclusive. You had to get access through the pack or from an event. People came with different expectations than the open beta. Anyone can play.

MMORPG: Do we expect this flood of players to disrupt the game?

Bartek: I think there’s always a chance someone will break some things, to be honest. We are preparing for this.

MMORPG: We just played a little shadow warrior 3 today. It’s a whole different kind of game too space punks. Has Jagex helped with this change of direction?

Bartek: Yes, we have been working very closely with Jagex every day, both on the technical side and on the living game side space punks is a living game and the development is very different from Shadow Warrior’s approach.

MMORPG: Was that part of the way you tell the story? Shadow Warrior seems pretty linear compared to Space Punk’s drop-in drop-out playstyle?

Bartek: I think it’s different, but not that different. The biggest challenge is remembering that there are story beats that you need to hit. At the same time, you need to create content and missions that are replayable for players to enjoy [it] if they don’t just play it once, but 15, 16 or 100 times. That was the biggest challenge for us, to change the mindset from a one-off type of experience to a still story-driven experience that can be expanded and varied.

I’ll give you an example. You have story missions in it space punks, but you also get versions of these, which are repeatable species of this mission. In this case, you can change some elements of it. Alternatively, you might get some missions that introduce a mechanic and this is then used in other missions that are repayable. The main thing is that these refundable missions are built differently to better offer players this continuous experience.

MMORPG: How much more of the game can players expect in the open beta?

Bartek: Regarding closed tests, our last update related to the story. We gave players new story missions. Open Beta we start with such missions. Now let’s focus on some systems like improving crafting, iterating mission systems, making content replayable, and so on. You get the same mission pack. For our next update, you will get two features that will focus on the story in the next update, as well as many other updates. Most of the core elements of the game are fixed, but we still want to add some things, but mainly focus on the endgame. Of course, this may change during testing, but we’ll have to see.

MMORPG: Open Beta isn’t just a change in the game, it’s a massive change for the community. are you ready for this

Bartek: I will say that I know the preparations are being made. Surely Jagex could answer that better because that’s one of the ways they help us with things like community management. We’re super excited to see people joining the Discord and what they’re doing. Whether it’s playing the game, fan art, or 3D printing their own characters.

I’m going to say something about the increase in our community, which is great too. We’ll get as much feedback and data on what’s working.

MMORPG: Does that help you make decisions to improve the game?

Bartek: Yes very. Our analytics team works with Jagex, who have a lot more experience on this side of things, and it’s very fruitful. This is one of the most powerful aspects of the closed beta test. A great example is that we have seen from the data collected that our players are not playing together as much as we had hoped. They seemed to play a lot solo.

We basically checked what could be the case. After looking at everything we could, we decided to bring the party UI to the front to make it more prominent. We did it and it doubled the number of people playing together. A small UI change made a massive difference in the experience for the game and we were able to spot and address it through data analytics.

That’s what you see in data. You may see too many people not successfully completing this mission, so tweak the difficulty and there may be an instant change for the people playing the game.

MMORPG: In view of the game’s release, why should you choose the free-to-play model with monetization?

Bartek: To support the losing game, yes you need people who are able to play the game and consistently choose to give us the Monday to do our work. This allows us to keep developing it. However, we didn’t want to be aggressive with our monetization because we know players don’t like that. We looked at games that have successfully done this, like Warfame and Path of Exile. We looked at their practices and weighed what we think is fair and what we think allows us to continue creating content.

MMORPG: Is that why you implemented a weapon upgrade system instead of making money from game skin transfers?

Bartek: Actually, the original reason for this was to give point-oriented players the opportunity to upgrade their weapon in order to craft the best possible weapon and improve it. Related to this is our core principle that our monetization should not interfere with a player’s power. It can change the way things look or improve the quality of life, but it will never affect your power.

MMORPG: Back to the upcoming test. What are your hopes for the open beta?

Bartek: Two things. As a designer, I really want to see how everything works. We know how we think things are going to work, but we can see it live now. Also, I hope people will like it space punks. It’s a game we’ve been working on for so long and it will be great if people enjoy their time with it.
