Each year Apple releases a brand new iOS, the software that runs your iPhone.

These iOS updates add new features but also include important security updates that close vulnerabilities exploited by hackers.

Apple just announced iOS 16 at its WWDC 2022 event, and we expect it to go live alongside the iPhone 14 in September.

However, some iPhone models that could run iOS 15 cannot be updated to iOS 16.

That means they’ll miss security updates later this year.

Apple can’t support all iPhones forever – so very old iPhone models often lose access to updates.

Sometimes these old iPhones aren’t capable of supporting new features, or not enough people are using them to justify deploying an update.

Now the iPhone 6S, iPhone 7 and 1st generation iPhone SE are being cut off by Apple.

These phones were compatible with the current iOS 15.5 but will not get iOS 16.

Here is the full list of devices supported by iOS 16:

  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro max
  • iphone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 pro
  • iPhone 12 pro max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8plus
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation or newer)

If you’re using an older iPhone, you simply need to upgrade your handset to a newer device to access iOS 16.

If you can’t get the latest iOS, you’ll lose access to the latest security fixes.

These are critical patches that close vulnerabilities used by hackers to gain access to your systems.

So using a very old iPhone that cannot be updated could put you at risk.

If you can’t update to iOS 16, you’d better update your iPhone sooner rather than later.

In any case, iOS 16 is packed with new features that might tempt you.

This includes a new lock screen with widgets, stylized portrait wallpapers and notifications that roll up from the bottom.

Messages is also getting a major update that allows you to edit or retrieve recently sent messages, as well as recover recently deleted messages.

You can also mark conversations as unread.

iOS 16 is now available for developers in beta, followed by a public beta next month.

And the software will eventually roll out later this year, likely in September.
