Russia launched new nuclear exercises on Wednesday, as Germany joined the US in a pledge to send advanced weapons to Ukraine.

Yars missiles, carrying nuclear warheads capable of hitting almost any country on earth, have been used in exercises west of Moscow.

The Russian Defense Ministry released images showing what it described as “intense maneuvering operations” involving its Yars nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile systems.

About 1,000 soldiers took part in the drills to disperse the launchers, which could be the first step in breaking out nuclear war.

The group was seen removing the camouflage from what appeared to be Yars weapons before a vehicle escorted by soldiers made its way down a dirt track.

It comes just hours after US President Joe Biden announced he would send advanced rocket artillery to Ukraine.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz then pledged to send his state-of-the-art IRIS-T aircraft missile systems to Ukraine to help defend against Russian attacks.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its latest exercises involve “strategic rocketman work”.[ing] to solve the problems of bringing missile systems to field positions.

It has been claimed that troops make marches of up to 62 miles, dispersing units with a change in “technical equipment, the organization of camouflage and combat protection.”

A spokesman said: “At the same time, a number of measures are being taken to detect, block and destroy conditional saboteurs, including the deployment of new Typhoon-M anti-sabotage combat vehicles equipped with unmanned aerial vehicles.”

In addition, according to the Ministry of Defense, a special remotely operated vehicle called the Listva was used to transport the Yars missile system on combat patrol routes.

“According to the legend of the exercise, conditional saboteurs planted remote-controlled explosive devices in the column’s route,” she added.

“The MDR neutralized them on the side of the road.”

One of the highest priorities of the exercise is to work out a wide range of issues related to the search and destruction of conditional sabotage and reconnaissance formations day and night, the Department of Defense said.

It added: “A commander’s service was organized along the routes of autonomous launchers, protecting a convoy with large equipment and monitoring its passage through checkpoints.

“The exercise makes it possible to improve the level of training of personnel, the coherence of formations and military units of the Strategic Missile Forces.”

President Joe Biden said the US will send Kyiv more advanced missile systems that will help hit enemy forces at longer ranges.

These missile systems have twice the range of missile systems currently deployed by the Russian Armed Forces and are much more accurate.

A day after invading Ukraine, Vladimir Putin threatened anyone who “tries to interfere” with an “immediate” response.
