Frustrated holidaymakers are banding together to book private jets in a bid to beat Britain’s airport chaos, new figures show.
Families band together to lower the cost of a private charter to their favorite holiday destinations such as Spain, Ibiza and Greece.
A group of 10 can buy seats for around £150 more than on a traditional large passenger charter – many of which have been cancelled.
So-called empty legs – when a private plane returns empty to its home airport – are rented out for a fraction of the normal rental cost.
Empty flight bookings reduce aircraft operator losses and allow ordinary people to afford a seat on a private jet.
Airport chaos across the country has resulted in unprecedented demand for private flights, particularly empty leg pricing options.
Flight booking app tail salvation – which allows passengers to book empty legs – saw a 50 percent increase in bookings compared to the same time last year.
It has also seen a 100 percent increase in private flight inquiries over the past two months, while empty leg searches have increased by 450 percent over the past month.
Inquiries about the cost of a private jet have also increased by 90 percent in the last month.
The app says it’s seen “unprecedented” group bookings from people wanting to avoid the chaos at the airport.
Chief Aviation Officer James Moon said: “New technologies have lifted the curtain on a service that has always been exclusive.
“For those willing to spend a little more to avoid long lines and uncertainty – but not pay the ridiculously prohibitive cost of a traditional private jet charter – there is an alternative out there.
“A wide range of aircraft are available through digital booking systems, providing access to numerous flight options including empty legs – which can reduce airfare costs by up to 40 percent.”
He added: “We see ordinary people who would never have booked a private jet teaming up with friends, family and neighbors to bring the price down and make sure they not only catch their flight but have the vacation they do.” they wish.”
A traditional private charter of a ten seater turboprop aircraft to Palma, Mallorca would cost between £15,000 and £25,000.
But the price can be reduced to as much as £600 per person for a group of ten by booking a plane’s empty legs for the return journey.
A typical two-week return flight to Palma, Mallorca in economy class costs around £450 depending on when it’s booked – just £150 cheaper – with no guarantee of the flight departing this summer.
The app searches the current and future locations of thousands of private jets and books two empty legs for the return flight.
The more passengers it can allocate to the flight, the cheaper it will be per passenger.
It is possible to book with friends or share the jet with strangers.
