Nursing strike 2023: Further dates announced for January 2023

Nurses are set to strike again on January 18-19 unless salary negotiations are opened, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said.

This month nurses left on December 15th and 20th and this further action will follow the RCN’s promise to step up its strike campaign if ministers continue to refuse to negotiate salaries.

The guard reports nurses will refuse to work on the January deadlines at 55 different NHS trusts, up from 44 trusts since the December deadlines.

RCN members will no longer strike in Wales and Northern Ireland in January, while Scottish members are awaiting an election result before announcing dates.

RCN Secretary General Pat Cullen said: “The Government had the opportunity to end this dispute before Christmas but instead decided to throw nursing staff out in the cold again in January. I don’t want to prolong this argument, but the Prime Minister left us no choice.

“The public support has been heartwarming and I am more confident than ever that this is the right thing to do for patients and for the future of the NHS.

“The voice of Care- will not be ignored. Lack of staff and low pay make patient care unsafe – the sooner ministers get to the negotiating table, the sooner this can be resolved. I won’t dig in if they don’t dig in.”

The RCN had hoped for a pay rise of 5% above inflation but has said they will lower that demand when Health Secretary Stebe Barclay starts talks with them.
