But a survey has found that there may be cheaper and tastier alternatives to be found at your local supermarket.

Champion consumer What? tested the hazelnut spread with a range of supermarket versions – and two champions emerged.

The manufacturers in the blind taste test – 58 of whom tested a wide range of spreads – liked the versions from Waitrose and Lidl best.

The chocolate spread has been put to the test



They’re not two supermarkets often seen together, but if you’re looking to change up your hazelnut chocolate supplier, read on.

Best buy: Waitrose Essential Chocolate Hazelnut Cheese – 83%

£1.70 for 400g (43p per 100g)

It has ticked a lot of boxes for the panel, receiving high praise for its taste, texture, aroma and appearance. Three-quarters raved about the power of the hazelnut flavor and thought the sweetness level was right. A total of 83% thought the thickness was just right.

Waitrose was one of the most expensive brands they tested but at 43p/100g it still offers a decent savings over Nutella.

Best buy: Lidl Choco Nissa Spread – 81%

Lidl’s Best Buy chocolate canopy is the magazine’s most valuable pick. It’s one of the cheapest they’ve tested and costs 61p less per jar than the winning Waitrose spread.

It also has the least amount of sugar and saturated fat, so it’s ideal if you’re looking for a slightly healthier option (although it’s still classed as high in sugar and saturated fat).

Tesco Chocolate hazelnut – 78%

£1.50 for 400g (38p per 100g)

Supermarket chocolate hazelnuts are a great option for Tesco shoppers looking for a cheaper alternative to Nutella.

Not everyone liked its darker color, but the panel said they liked its taste and texture.

Nutella Chocolate Spread – 77%

£2.90 for 350g (83p per 100g)

The popular branded spreads are still rated very favorably but are already outside the top three. In testing, it was considered one of the best-rated spreads in terms of flavor, but not everyone liked the texture of Nutella, with a whopping 62% saying it was too thick for taste. their.

Surprisingly Aldi didn’t hit the spot – despite regularly winning for his other branded scams.
