Oculus is a particularly tough thriller for Mike Flanagan to Pitch

The idea of haunted objects/cursed artifacts is not new to the horror genre; it has been used in several films with different capacities. “Oculus” claims that the mirror is the sole source of terror. There’s no Anabelle-esque cursed doll in Flanagan’s film, nor is there any sort of chilling lore that justifies the mirror’s ability to do what it does. The mirror simply exists, causing hallucinations in those who interact with it – and this is one of the many reasons “Oculus” works so well as a horror movie.

In one interview on the film’s success shortly after its TIFF premiere, Flanagan explained that “it’s extremely difficult to recommend a movie about a mirror.” The standard response to the film’s premise is total disbelief that an everyday object like a mirror can be scary, and Flanagan explains. why “Oculus” works within this framework:

“A mirror by itself isn’t inherently scary, but what makes the movie so scary is what happens to the people who interact with it and how they experience reality.”

In “Oculus”, the mirror alters the characters’ behavior, causing them to commit atrocities that they don’t even remember. Alan (Rory Cochrane) is captivated by the ghostly presence, while his wife Marie (Katee Sackhoff) is haunted by images of decomposing bodies. Things take a turn for the worse when 12-year-old Tim is forced to shoot his biological father to death after the latter attacks him while under the control of the mirror’s dark forces. Tim is traumatized and his older sister, Kaylie (Karen Gillan), returns to their home years later, and the mirror strikes again. So the real horror of the cursed mirror lies in the fact that it can manipulate people’s reality and heighten their paranoia in irreparable ways.
