Old School RuneScape releases Guardians of the Rift, issuing hotfixes and a server rollback

The previously announced launch of the new runecrafting minigame in Old school RuneScape, Guardians of the Rift, went live with today’s update. Although there were some serious issues with the update, the team decided to issue some hotfixes and reset the server.

Guardians of the Rift started with a new quest called Temple of the Eye. In this quest you will help a sorceress with her research and visit the Temple of the Eye. It is your responsibility to uncover a mystery that stretches way back to the dawn of magic, leading you to a mini-quest and beginning your runecrafting skill tests. If you’re successful, you’ll unlock Guardians of the Rift and get some Runecraft XP, a quest point, and a medium pouch.

Once you’ve unlocked the mini-game, you’re good to go and see what the final version looks like. Guardians is secure so you don’t lose anything, and it’s also only accessible to skilling accounts. Once the game starts, your task is to help the Great Warden close the Abyss Rift. Keep the Guardian energized by mining Guardian Fragments and then combining them into Guardian Essence. There are a few more steps, but if you feel like your runecrafting is good enough, you should be able to do it. You must improve the barriers, fight against Abyssal creatures that appear, and even create smaller Wardens to help the Great Warden stay defended.

After the update went live, there were reports of bugs that resulted in items that are normally not tradable being able to be picked up by other players when dropped into an instance. This alone was severe enough to reset the server. There were also bugs with Temple of the Eye where mobile players saw the game crash. A number of other fixes and bugs affecting players not completing the Temple of the Eye quest, returning to the minigame, or being unable to craft runes as expected have all been fixed.
