Manchester United on this day in 2019 completed the £80million signing of England defender Harry Maguire from Leicester.
The then 26-year-old England international signed a six-year contract at Old Trafford with an option for an additional year in a deal that included a world-record fee for a defender.
Maguire was closely linked with Manchester but Leicester stuck by their valuation and the fee exceeded the £75m Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.
Maguire told United’s official website: “I’m delighted to have signed for this great club. I have really enjoyed my time at Leicester and would like to thank everyone at the club and the fans for their fantastic support over the last two seasons.
“However, when Manchester United come knocking on your door, it is an incredible opportunity.
“Following my discussions with the manager, I am delighted with the vision and plans he has for the team. It can clearly be seen that Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) is building a team to win trophies.
“I’m now looking forward to meeting my new teammates and starting the season.”
Maguire has made almost 150 appearances for United and has been named captain but it hasn’t panned out the way centre-backs expected when he made the move.
His move to Old Trafford coincided with three difficult years for the club and he has drawn criticism for some of his performances.
