In our first ‘yes, this is completely normal’ story of 2022, we are delighted to report that a circus has just performed UndertaleThe audience’s song Megalovania with Pope Francis. You have read correctly.
Some context: yesterday, ol’ Pontifex hosted the Italian circus, Rony Roller, as part of the general audience he attends every week. As you can see in the Youtube video embedded below – taken from the Vatican News channel – the circus ended with a lively performance themed by Sans (also known as Megolovania).
You can check out the entire audience segment below, but the most fun (including fire jugglers and Undertale) kicks off at 53:28. If you want to jump right to Megolovania, go to 1:04:40.
This is also not the first time the circus has performed for His Holiness (although it is the first time video game music has appeared in front of an audience). The troupe also performed for Pope Benedict XVI in 2006 and more recently performed for Pope Francis in 2017. Will they be invited back after his sour face in this performance? .
So does Pope Francis enjoy one of Undertale’s most popular hits? Well, after the show ended, he said performances like that”[put] we are exposed to beauty, which always brings us happiness”, before concluding “beauty is a way to find god” (thanks, Gamer). So… he said you can touch God through Undertale? Sorry to paraphrase, but yes! He is!
Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time there’s been a mash-up between Pope x Undertale: back in 2016, YouTuber MatPat was invited to a summit in the Vatican to discuss how the Internet “brings people back together.” together” (hmm). MatPat was informed that he should come with a gift for Pope Francis…so MatPat took a copy of Undertale for him.
Why? Yes, the Pope has declared 2016 “the year of mercy for the Catholic church, a time that celebrates forgiveness and compassion when one can choose to harm a person,” and MatPat said. that the frequent theme in Undertale is mercy. Here you are.
What will be the next Pope x Undertale’s fateful encounter? Maybe he’ll appear in Toby Fox’s next game, bringing the whole relationship between the Vatican and the game into a wonderful, holy circle.
