One in 10 London congested zone fines removed

ALMOST one in 10 drivers caught by London’s weekend congested zone has had its fines terminated – and there are a number of ways to challenge the decision.

Since 2020, motorists have had to pay £15 to travel in the congested area of the capital any day of the week between 7am and 10pm.

But more than 34,000 of the 387,174 fines handed out in the region in 2021 were overturned, according to figures given to Daily telegram.

Transport for London (TfL) said half of the settled fines were given after presenting when the driver was at fault.

And from July to December 2020, the number of fines issued is about 3 to 5% higher (8 – 10% of people entering the area) than on a weekday (5%).

The numbers are reported to be down in 2021 but almost double the rate of drivers getting caught on Saturday and Sunday compared to the rest of the week.

However, New changes today mean motorists will now only need to pay the £15 . fee if they go into central London from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and from 12pm to 6pm on weekends and bank holidays.

Transport for London confirmed the changes in December after a 10-week consultation last year with nearly 10,000 responses.

Those who wish to object to their fine must present it in writing and send it to the TFL within 28 days of service.

If representatives are denied, they can appeal the decision.

This will then be assessed by the independent hearing service London Courts and a magistrate will review the appeal and make an independent decision.

Figures released by the transport authority show motorists paid £44m in fines to TfL for failing to pay congestion charges over the weekend between July 2020 and January 2022.

A TfL spokesman told the Telegraph that reducing the weekend toll from 12pm to 6pm would “striking the right balance between addressing the traffic challenges in central London”. and support culture, hotels and nighttime businesses, which have been some of the hardest hit during the pandemic.”

He added on the number of fines that have been settled: “The changes to the operating hours of the fee were widely publicized in a wide campaign and widely reported in the local media, national and international.”
