One in five in Brighton have not received a council tax refund

ALMOST one in five households in the city who were eligible for a council tax refund still hadn’t received one by the end of July, new figures show.

Payments started hitting people’s bank accounts in April, but figures from the Department of Leveling Up, Housing and Communities show about 21,076, or 19.7 per cent, of eligible households in Brighton and Hove were still waiting at the end of July.

Payments have been issued automatically for those who pay council tax by direct debit, for those who don’t have to fill out a short form.

A spokesman for the council said that while they want to make sure everyone gets their energy rebate by the end of September, “to do that we need the help of a few eligible people”.

He said: “Anyone paying by direct debit should have received their payment by now.

“For more than 35,000 other households that don’t pay this way, we had to confirm or provide their bank details.

“We have written to affected households and asked them to fill out a short form on our website to give us their bank details so we can pay them as soon as possible.

“We then sent out reminders to anyone who did not respond to that request and are working on those as quickly as possible.

“For people who have not responded to their letter by the deadline or are unable to respond, we must make the payment directly into their council tax account.”

Across England, 2.6 million households from more than 19 million beneficiaries were still waiting for support at the end of July.

Leveling Up Secretary Greg Clark said: “We want to make sure those most in need get the support they are entitled to to help households with living expenses.

“As such, I urge everyone to verify their eligibility to receive the rebate and contact their councils if they are not.” One in five in Brighton have not received a council tax refund
