A father who was taking his family to celebrate his mother’s 60th birthday had to cancel everything after being hit by a “carnage” at the airport.

Jason Nash, 37, had arrived at Bristol Airport with plenty of time to spare together with his wife, two young children aged five and 10 and his mother, who has not been on holiday in years.

The trip to Rhodes was organized for his mother’s 60th birthday as she hasn’t been on vacation for years, they say Somerset Live.

The family arrived well before their 4.10pm flight on Saturday 28 May and read how busy it was ahead of the half term and anniversary weekend.

Mr Nash said they got through security smoothly but noted there was an hour and 45 minute delay at the flight board.

There were also delays at the airport on other TUI flights.

“The times when the gate needed to be announced came and went and people started getting a little restless and asking for information and they couldn’t give us anything,” Mr Nash said, recalling the experience .

The departure time was then pushed back further and with no TUI staff at Bristol Airport – they rely on Swissport staff instead – there were difficulties communicating with the airline.

Mr Nash continued: “The board said ‘gate info’ for hours and finally we agreed that we were not going.

“There was another Paphos flight which was due to leave at half past twelve with TUI and they did the same and kept rescheduling it.”

At around 8pm a message came on the tannoy that they would be leaving later that evening, but Mr Nash then claims staff at Bristol Airport were unable to provide any further information.

Passengers then received an email from the airline telling them the entire holiday had been cancelled.

In a note sent by TUI to passengers, TUI apologized, claiming that the “serious disruption” was caused by “a combination of factors causing a significant operational disruption”.

It also said package holidays – flights and hotels – have also been cancelled.

The airline added that it will issue full refunds and a £200 voucher as an apology, along with mandatory £350 compensation under EU rules.

Mr Nash said there were other TUI passengers on various flights with young children, people who were due to go to funerals and even a wedding party whose wedding had to be called off after the airline canceled their package holiday.

He said: “The newlyweds were in tears because they missed their wedding.”

A TUI spokesman apologized for the cancellations and said the delays were a combination of factors causing significant disruption to operations.

“Unfortunately, we felt the impact on customers’ holidays was too great and made the difficult decision to cancel the flight.

“We have contacted affected customers as soon as we became aware of the change and all customers will receive a full refund within 14 days.

“We understand how disappointing and frustrating this is and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
