One Piece Odyssey: The upcoming JRPG features turn-based combat and 2 new characters
New screenshots from the upcoming JRPG One Piece Odyssey have shown off the game’s colorful turn-based combat and revealed two new characters.
Revealed on the game’s Japanese website and spotted by DualShockers, the combat has an interface reminiscent of the super-stylish Persona games and appears to feature a rock, paper, scissors, fists, weapon, weapon smashing system Beat swords and beat swords fists.
The screenshots (below) also feature several bizarre-looking enemies, including a giant fire-breathing lion/dragon, monkeys dressed up as bumblebees with ice cream hats, and a comparatively normal giant scorpion.
Two new characters were also revealed for the game, including Lim, a “mysterious girl who hates pirates,” and Adio, a drifter and explorer.
Movement seems to be another element of turn-based combat, although it doesn’t look like a full-fledged tactical RPG like a Fire Emblem game, for example. Instead, distance seems to affect what type of attacks a player can use: approach to swing your sword, but step back to fire a weapon.
Regular battles also have a chance to grow unexpectedly as more monsters invade, similar to a mechanic seen in Persona 5, for example, where the battle-hardened player can choose to take on the additional challenge for additional rewards, or just run Therefore.
Team Abilities will also be featured in One Piece Odyssey, allowing players to perform powerful combo attacks with other party members when certain conditions are met.
Revealed in March, One Piece Odyssey will be available for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, and PC, although the JRPG doesn’t have a release date (or window) just yet.
It’s not the only One Piece project in the works, as Netflix’s live-action series has now officially started production.
