Open House: There’s plenty to look forward to when the action begins in St Andrews

The 150th Open Championship started in St. Andrews on Thursday.

Here, the PA news agency looks forward to all the action in the final Major of the year.

McIlroy prepared himself for a difficult challenge

Rory McIlroy expected St Andrews to play hard and get harder as he started his final Open challenge.

The 2014 champion was due to tee off at 9.58am on the Old Course alongside defending champion Collin Morikawa and last week’s Scottish Open winner Xander Schauffele.

There have been suggestions that the game’s modern day big hitters could make the course look easy, but with fast and firm ground and likely wind, McIlroy is unconvinced.

By the end of the week, it’s only going to get super tricky.

He said: “I think with the state of the golf course, with a little bit of a breeze, you can bombard it here and hit the driver and get it close to the greens, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to make birdies out these positions.

“I just think with the way the course is playing and how tight and fast it is, it’s going to be just super difficult by the end of the week.”

McIlroy believes the conditions might even play into the hands of none other than Tiger Woods.

“There will be a game of chess this week and no one has been better at playing that type of chess on a golf course than Tiger in the last 20 years,” he said.

A two-time Open Champion on the Old Course, Woods inevitably leads the field when it comes to expertise on the famous Fife links. Other previous St Andrews winners who could challenge again are Zach Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen. Tyrrell Hatton could also be fantasizing about his chances after excelling in the Dunhill Links Championship. Although this event only features two rounds of the Old Course, Hatton won in 2016 and 2017 and finished runner-up in 2018.
