Welcome to the opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics, a completely normal Olympics in completely normal time.

Thanks for joining us. I’m Daniel Victor, one of a large group of New York Times journalists who will be watching the ceremony with you. We’ll be following not only the sports storyline, but also every bit of what makes the opening ceremony and the Olympics in general so compelling: the people, geopolitics, fashion, memes, and scientific spectacle that we are about to witness.
