Yesterday’s wake up Big news about the partnership between Sony and Bungie, the creators Fate 2, the community hubs for the game erupted in discussion and jokes surrounding the acquisition.
The developer, currently under the auspices of Sony Interactive Entertainment thanks to a check for $3.6 billion from the industry giant, immediately offered some important assurances to the world in a post on Official website and social media platform. These include the rest of the cross-platform Destiny 2, Bungie remains creatively independent, and all players get the same experience no matter where they play.
The overwhelming reaction on the game’s official Reddit was one positive from the community, thanks in large part to these guarantees. The FAQ published on Destiny 2 website did say that the upcoming Witch Queen expansion and Destiny 2 in general will not experience a drop in the experience on other platforms.
However, there is a considerable degree of skepticism from a section of players – especially those who have been playing since the PlayStation exclusive in 2014 – about the long-term prospects of the deal, regardless of what the statement is saying.
In a post titled “I want to be optimistic about Sony’s acquisition of Bungie, but the wording worries me.” created by Reddit user JavanNapoli, a code snippet of the aforementioned FAQ are highlighted with certain lines related to the marked exclusivity. Users and many other members of the community have noted carefully used language, implying non-exclusive promises referring only to published content.
The news also sent players around the area surfacing a wave of nostalgia for the original Destiny. Previously, Destiny players on the PlayStation were given access to exclusive cheers, strikes, and other activities. Thankfully, thanks to promises from Bungie that nothing like this will happen anytime soon, these posts mostly funny. (Image below is credited to Reddit User TheMustardChef).
Although on the subject of humor, the community could not afford to give one of these love running their gags overcome. This is, of course, referring to the Telesto, an exotic weapon so well known for disrupting the game that it has formed its own force of expert watchers within the player base. As the new owner of Bungie, and as a result the dreaded Telesto, Sony will surely have to take a light step to avoid disaster.
All in all, while Destiny 2’s distant future remains murky and uncertain, updates for the foreseeable future are still available to all players without distinction or bias. Whether that still happens a few years from now remains to be seen.
