Oracle faces class action lawsuit for “persecution” of 5 billion people

Irish Council of Civil Liberties senior fellow Johnny Ryan has filed a US class action lawsuit against Oracle over allegations that the tech giant improperly tracks and monitors people.

The litigation is being conducted jointly by two US privacy attorneys, Michael Katz-Lacabe, and Dr. Jennifer Golbeck, Associate Professor from Maryland.

“Oracle claims to have amassed detailed dossiers on five billion people and generates $42.4 billion in annual revenue,” the ICCL said in a statement.

“Oracle’s dossiers on individuals include names, home addresses, email addresses, online and real-world purchases, real-world physical movements, income, interests, and political beliefs, and a detailed account of online activity. Oracle also coordinates a global trade in dossiers on individuals through the Oracle Data Marketplace.”

The lawsuit will be initiated in California, which has the most advanced privacy laws in the United States. Oracle, which employs 143,000 people worldwide, is headquartered in Texas. The European headquarters are in Dublin, which employs 1,500 people.

A similar lawsuit against Oracle and Salesforce, filed under the GDPR in the Netherlands, was recently ruled inadmissible due to a lack of proven public support for the case.

The US legal challenge alleges various violations of both California and US privacy and communications laws.

“Oracle has violated the privacy of billions of people around the world,” said Dr. Ryan. “This is a Fortune 500 company on a dangerous mission to track where every person in the world goes and what they do. We are taking this action to stop Oracle’s monitoring machine.”

A spokesperson for Oracle told that “this is not something we can comment on”. Oracle faces class action lawsuit for “persecution” of 5 billion people
