A COMMON fruit could hold the secret to shifting stubborn fat, a study has found.
It could even provide results within days without going to the gym and doing a full workout.
In addition to taking a half-hour walk five days a week, taking currant extract can help with weight loss.
It might be especially effective for people with more body fat on their legs, research found.
A concentrated source of natural plant-based phytochemicals called anthocyanins, berry supplements make the body prefer fat for fuel.
Researchers from the University of Chichester, meanwhile, tested a group of women who were active in their free time 30 minutes of brisk walking.
They hit the road after taking 600 mg of New Zealand blackcurrant extract, CurraNZ, for seven days.
Black currants specifically from New Zealand are considered a “superfood”with higher proportions of anthocyanins.
The experts found that the supplement helped increase fat burning by an average of 25 percent.
In the women who actually responded to the black currant, the researchers increased fat burning by up to 66 percent.
people who had more fat on the legs saw a greater effect than those who had more fat on their arms.
Researchers believe this is due to adipocytes, fat cells, in the legs, which may be more involved in burning fat during exercise than in the arms or abdomen.
This study showed that women more than doubled their fat burning rates compared to men undergoing the same exercise program.
Women naturally rely more heavily on fat for fuel compared to men, which is compounded by black currant.
Mark Willems, Professor of Exercise Physiology at the University of Chichester says: “We can honestly believe that blackcurrant extract is a very useful supplement for body weight management when used with exercise and a restricted diet.
“These latest results provide even more evidence that New Zealand black currant extract may provide greater benefits to people with extra weight – particularly in the legs.
“You don’t have to go to the gym or do hours of strenuous exercise — you can enjoy significant improvements in normal activities throughout the day.
“This could be a walk to the store, gardeningor doing housework – any activity of low to moderate intensity falls into this category.
“Most of us do this naturally for a few hours a day — without breaking a sweat.”
Anthocyanins are a subclass of polyphenols that give fruits and vegetables their distinctive coloring, over 500 of which have been identified in nature.
The anthocyanins found in blackcurrants have been shown to be good for improving circulation and burning fat.
Professor Willems added: “Even people who make all the right nutritional choices by eating lots of fruit and vegetables will benefit from using this blackcurrant extract.
“We’ve seen improvements in these individuals with high dietary intakes of anthocyanins, meaning that a New Zealand black currant extract provides these additional health and exercise benefits, even if you’re health conscious and doing everything right.”
