Oscar Issac said he was inspired by British comedies like The Office, Stath Lets Flats and An Idiot Abroad while preparing for his role in the upcoming Marvel miniseries Moon Knight.
he US actor, who stars as the protagonist of the series Marc Spector, said he loves English humor and has studied communities in north London to perfect his accent.
Moon Knight follows the story of Spector, a mercenary with dissociative identity disorder, meaning he inhabits several different characters, including Steven Grant, a mild-mannered English gift shop clerk.
Also the channel for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, Spector soon becomes embroiled in a life-threatening mystery.
“It’s set in London and when I asked why, the answer was that we have too many characters in New York,” Isaac said at a press conference.
“I love English humor like The Office and Stath Lets Flats and so much of that humor I find so funny and I thought there was an opportunity here.
“What if we did it English, what if Peter Sellers was approached with a Marvel project, what would he do?
“So I started thinking about it and that led me to Karl Pilkington from An Idiot Abroad, not so much for the accent but just for his sense of humor where you don’t tell if he knows he’s funny .
“Russel Kane was another comedian I heard too.”
Isaac said he took inspiration from communities in Enfield, north London, to help him with his character’s accent and “shyness”.
He added that he had also enlisted the help of his brother, who acted opposite him, in preparation for the character’s split personalities.
“That’s the closest thing on earth to me, so he came in and played either Stephen or Marc, he did the accent and everything,” he said.
“It was really helpful to have someone who is not only a great actor but also shares my DNA to play with.
“That was something I didn’t anticipate, how technically challenging it would be, showing up and deciding which character to play first, fade that out, give my brother notes and do the scene.”
Ethan Hawke and May Calamawy star alongside Isaac in Moon Knight, which airs March 30 on Disney+.
