Marvel Comic Universe actor William Hurt has died aged 71.
The Oscar-winning actor, who starred in several installments of the superhero franchise, passed away a week before his 72nd birthday.
He died peacefully and of natural causes, according to a statement shared online by his son Will.
Hurt has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor over the past three years for Kiss Of The Spider Woman in 1985, Children Of A Lesser God in 1986 and Broadcast News in 1987.
He won the Academy Award for Best Actor and the Bafta Award for Kiss Of The Spider Woman in 1985.
He was again nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the 2005 crime thriller A History Of Violence.
He first appeared in a Marvel film as General Thaddeus Ross opposite Edward Norton in the 2008 film Incredible Hulk.
He later reprized the role for performances in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow.
“It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar-winning actor, on March 13, 2022, a week before his 72nd birthday. that,” his family said in a statement first shared by Deadline.

“He died peacefully, among his family, of natural causes.
“Family requests privacy at this time.”
Other industry members paid tribute to Hurt following the news, describing his death as a “huge loss” and sharing personal experiences of working with him.
Marvel star Mark Ruffalo wrote: “Wow, another big loss to the acting community.
“Great actor. Great mind. REMEMBER.”
Gladiator star Russell Crowe said: “William Hurt has passed away.

Comedian Patton Oswald William said Hurt was “an outstanding stage and film actor”.
“Then he came and guested on @TheKOQ and was very funny, hilarious. ‘This is a delicious cake. And I’m not a douchebag. ‘Rest in peace,” he wrote.
US actor Albert Brooks, who appeared with him in Broadcast News, wrote: “RIP William Hurt. Sad to hear this news.
“Working with him on Broadcast News was amazing. He will be remembered.”
