Oscars organizers are launching a formal review after Will Smith punched Chris Rock during Sunday night’s live ceremony.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued a further statement following the incident, which took place in front of a live audience packed with A-listers.
Will slapped Chris in the face for his joke about wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair.
Jada, who has alopecia, didn’t look at all impressed after Chris told her he’s looking forward to seeing her in GI Jane 2 – a role Demi Moore shaved her head for.
The statement read: “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr Smith at last night’s show. We have officially initiated a formal investigation into the incident and will consider further actions and consequences consistent with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law.”

The statement released by AMPAS follows a late-night tweet following the altercation, in which they wrote, “The Academy does not condone violence of any kind.”
The probe could result in Will being expelled from AMPAS or suffering some sort of suspension from the organization and its events, including next year’s Oscars.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed that Chris declined to file a police report against the actor.
A spokesman for the force said they were “aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program …[which] one person slaps another”.
“The person concerned has declined to file a police report. If the party involved desires a police report at a later date, the LAPD is available to prepare an investigative report.”
Will – who won the Best Actor award later that night – went on stage and punched the presenter before returning to his seat and yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out of your friggin’ mouth.”
Chris seemed shocked by the incident as he attempted to continue presenting the best documentary category.
He said, “That was the greatest night in television history.”
After Chris left the stage, rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs appeared and quipped, “Will and Chris, we’re gonna work this out like family. Right now we’re moving on with love. Everyone’s doing a nose.”
Later that evening Will won his first Oscar for his performance in King Richard and apologized on stage for his earlier actions.
“Love will make you do crazy things,” the emotional winner confessed, referencing his outburst.
