At Anime Expo 2019, Hatori chatted with Viz Media about “Ouran High School Host Club.” During the discussion, the mangaka explained how the idea for the manga was born, and all came to a conclusion:
“Ouran High School Host Club was born around the time I was making Millennium Snow. And my editor at the time, we were just pitching ideas. And he came up – he just gave it. And at the time, there were relationship video games that were quite popular and host clubs were also popular. That meeting, nothing really hooked me. I wasn’t particularly drawn to a particular genre, because it was just a brainstorming meeting. But then someone put the words together. to each other like, “Well, what if there was a host club in a high school?”
The manga itself is pretty hilarious, with various situations where the main character, Haruhi Fujioka, makes herself one of the main sources of humour. The manga’s imitation of the parody otaku culture is sure to be amusing enough for anyone familiar enough with that subculture, especially targeting fujoshi and fudanshi (male fans) in the face of reverse harem style. in “Ouran High School Host Club.”
The anime is available now on Netflix.
