Over 1.4 MILLION Google Chrome users warned about dangerous errors with high costs

DODGY Google Chrome extensions with more than a million downloads have been spotted by cybersecurity fans.

In a blog post this week, McAfee researchers highlighted five Chrome add-ons that stealthily steal users’ browsing activity.

The downloads track online retailers the victim visits and change background data to make it appear as if they got there via a special link.

This special URL — known as an affiliate link — earns the crooks who created the extension a fee for all of the victim’s purchases.

The extensions have been downloaded more than 1.4 million times, researchers wrote on Monday.

And while they do not cause any direct financial damage to those who downloaded them, they do expose their browsing history to crooks.

This history can be used to launch phishing attacks and other scams against unsuspecting victims.

McAfee urged Chrome users to be vigilant when downloading extensions, as even those with a lot of downloads can cause harm.

Chrome extensions are like apps for your browser and allow you to change and customize your experience.

For example, extensions can translate foreign websites for you or save all your passwords.

Shady extensions disguised as legitimate are banned by Google.

The company monitors and tries to keep the Chrome Web Store – the official online marketplace for extensions – free from them.

However, thousands slip through the cracks every year.

Cyber crooks prefer to run scams via extensions, partly because they are so popular and subject to few security checks.

The extensions uncovered by McAfee were disguised as add-ons for Netflix, screenshot buttons, and a price tracking tool.

They have now been removed from the Chrome Web Store but may still be active in your browser.

If you use any of the following extensions, it is best to remove them from your browsers immediately.

  • Netflix party – 800,000 downloads
  • Netflix party 2 – 300,000 downloads
  • Full Page Screenshot Capture – Screenshots – 200,000 downloads
  • FlipShope – price tracker extension – 80,000 downloads
  • AutoBuy Flash Sales – 20,000 downloads

Researchers urged users to take extra precautions to verify an extension’s security when it asks for additional permissions.

“This blog highlights the risk of installing extensions, even those with a large install base, as they can still contain malicious code,” they said.
