Some early UI images from surveillance 2 were shown online via Artstation, an online art portfolio platform where artists from diverse backgrounds showcase their work. Originally caught by Attack of the Fanboy, Jayson Kirby – former UI designer at Activision Blizzard – posted a variety of early UI designs of the upcoming team FPS here.
This includes a showcase of the main menu with a battle pass option, weekly challenges, player confirmation levels, as well as a variety of new end-of-game screens. While these screens are from a development version of the game that is now quite old, at least two years old by Jayson’s own admission, they can provide clues as to the direction Overwatch 2 is taking.
A Battle Pass seems like a natural step forward for Overwatch 2, as it’s a progression feature that many live service games in this space have openly embraced at this point. With Overwatch, getting that one cosmetic product you really wanted often felt like it felt a bit grim. At least with a Battle Pass, there would be clearer goals to work toward.
Funnily enough, it was about two years ago that Jeff Kaplan – former game director at Overwatch – sat down in an interview with PCGamesN to talk about Overwatch and share his thoughts on Battle Passes. “I think Battle Passes are cool. Aside from monetization, a Battle Pass is a fun interaction mechanism.
If you look at a game like Diablo 3, they have what’s called a Season Journey, which is essentially a Battle Pass. It’s not monetized in any way, it’s just a bunch of cool content – those are the things you should be doing in game, and if you do, we’ll reward you. I think this is a great system.”
With that in mind, the revelation that a Battle Pass existed in early UI designs isn’t too surprising, although it’s day and night to actually see it rather than let Jeff talk about its merits. As it stands, we’ll just have to wait until official news drops to see if the feature makes the cut.
