Overwatch 2’s new ping system gives players more ways to communicate

In the wake of surveillance 2 Announcing the Beta Date and an apology video by Game Director Aaron Keller promising that the team would give more consistent updates on progressthe surveillance 2 News floodgates have officially opened. In this latest update, we get a glimpse of surveillance 2‘s revised ping system.

“We wanted to create a system that would improve voice communication and provide alternative ways to share information with your team,” says system designer Gavin Winter in the blog post.

New features include character-specific callouts, where when a player pings, their teammates will hear that notification in that player’s hero’s voice. The blog gives an example: “When you play Tracer and ping an enemy Reaper, your teammates will hear Tracer calling that Reaper’s location.” The blog goes into more detail on how pings show the last known location for moving enemies and the Giving players more information on how to move through maps without worrying about being ambushed. There’s also a new feature that pings a teammate’s location on the mini-map, allowing players to respond to pings based on decisions made in a new comm wheel. Now when a team’s Genji starts spamming “I need healing,” the game will show friendly healers on the minimap where Genji is so they can heal him, thereby silencing him.

An improved ping system has long been a request from over watch Player. Not only does it improve a team’s ability to communicate, but it’s also an important accessibility tool for players who can’t (or not) participate in voice chat. The developers noted that the new ping system is still a work in progress and may change as the game’s closed beta approaches.
