OVERWATCH 2 is upon us, and big changes are coming to the game, including one that has already managed to piss off fans.
One of developer Blizzard’s most controversial decisions is locking heroes behind the Battle Pass, making them inaccessible to some players.
The original Overwatch is popular with fans for its roster of different heroes with vastly different abilities.
And if a character doesn’t work for you, you can always change it.
Similar games like Apex Legends do not allow you to change your character mid-game like Overwatch does.
This creates an interesting dynamic where you can change your heroes mid-game to face your opponents.
However, in the sequel, you won’t be able to choose from the full roster of characters anymore.
Instead, players must complete the free Battle Pass challenges to unlock new characters.
The Battle Pass contains over 80 levels and new players must complete 55 levels before unlocking the new hero, Kiriko.
This is partly to encourage players to purchase the Premium Battle Pass to instantly unlock the character.
Speaking to GLHF, Game Director Aaron Keller defended the decision, saying, “We believe that despite this change, Overwatch remains a highly competitive game.
“Internally, we’ve talked about this topic as much, if not more, than any other topic related to the game over the past year.
“And we think it’s fair and allows Overwatch to maintain its competitive nature.”
He added that experienced Overwatch players will be able to use Kiriko from the game’s launch.
This decision was made to allow Blizzard to balance the new hero before making it available to the majority of the player base.
He said: “I think that levels the playing field at the start of a season.”
Players can judge the changes for themselves when Overwatch 2 launches on October 4, 2022.
