Ovo Energy could pay customers to reduce their energy consumption at key times

OVO energy has joined a scheme where it could pay its customers to reduce their energy use at key times.

The National Grid Electricity System Operator launched the program earlier this month and has been conducting trials with customers.

Some households made around £4 by participating for an hour when the service was tested over the past few weeks.

OVO will join people like Octopus Energy when signing up for the program and becomes the largest energy company in the process to participate.

The scheme will be open to 15,000 OVO‘s customers first, with that number set to increase after the first month.

In addition, the system is only open to customers with smart meters.

OVO said its customers could earn up to £100 as it will use the system intermittently between December 8 and March 31 next year.

Raman Bhatia, CEO of OVOsaid: “We are excited to join the National Grid Electricity System Operator’s Demand Flexibility Scheme and embark on another trial that rewards customers for their efforts to make small but significant changes to the way they use energy.

“We know winter will be a challenging time for many, so relieving that pressure where we can and supporting our customers has never been more important.”
