A gambler who became a millionaire just before Cheltenham in 2021 has revealed how he still lives in the same house and works.

Geoff, 51, from Bootle, won the huge sum a year ago, after entering a special contest.

The finalists in the Paddy Power Millionaire Chase were assigned a horse in the Imperial Cup race at Sandown. Held three days before the start of Cheltenham, Geoff watched with delight as his runner Langer Dan overtook his opponent.

The horse trained by Dan Skelton will receive a £50,000 bonus if it wins the Festival – and almost succeeded with a brave second.

He is again a contender to chase the double this year and has proven a favorite among punters in the build-up.

On that very day, former truck driver Geoff admitted that he had a funny feeling that things were going to work out for him.

“People always tell you, do you think that’s going to happen? And the truth, I have no doubt, I know it,” he said.

“But you don’t say that to everyone you’re friends! I just thought it was my day. It was amazing, and it eventually sank in. I called my dad. We cried on the phone.”

Geoff’s big win touched the hearts of the racing public as he revealed how his family overcame tragedy, following the death of his son from cancer at the age of 18, nearly 11 years ago.

Geoff says that the main benefit of winning cash is being able to help others.

When he earns life-changing money in Coronavirus pandemic, when Cheltenham went ahead without the crowds, he had to wait to book the holiday. The family has been to Majorca twice and made a trip to Turkey.

Geoff bought a Range Rover, but didn’t want to buy a new one, as well as expanding the garden with a Jacuzzi and canopy plus some outdoor furniture.

But he said: “We haven’t moved into a new house yet because we like the house we live in – we’ve paid off our mortgage – but we’ve settled in here and now that’s what we need. .

“Our neighbors know what happened and everyone has been wonderful, no one has ever been horrible or treated us differently.

“It’s really nice, given what’s happened to us as a family, with my son’s passing, people say it couldn’t have happened to a more beautiful couple.

“And of course, we can also help some family members, which is really nice – and that’s what money has allowed us to do, it’s great that we can do things so.”

To mark a year since his victory, Geoff hopes to go one of his days in Cheltenham and place a few bets on the horses Willie Mullins – and of course Langer Dan.

Next week, he’ll be back to work – and has no intention of giving up anytime soon.

“I left my previous job as a truck driver and now work part-time for a utility company, helping their engineers complete one job after another,” he said. “I was on duty four days a week and went in when I was called in and Kim (his wife) was off work three days a week.

“So winning really helped us in that way, it’s that you have more time to do things – even though you’re still really busy in the end!

“We plan to continue working short-term or temporarily for as long as we can.

“So that way, we’ll have enough money to use but not have to touch the savings.”
