The parents of a woman who was left to “rot” on a sofa for 12 years have been charged with second-degree murder.

The emaciated body of Lacey Fletcher, 36, who suffered from severe autism, was found January 3 at her family home in Slaughter, Louisiana, “fused” to the leather couch by her own feces.

Her parents, Clay and Sheila Fletcher, were indicted by a grand jury on second-degree murder after District Attorney Sam D’Aquilla argued that they intended to kill her.

According to investigators, Lacey’s body was semi-naked and sitting upright in a sunken crevice on the couch when it was discovered by a police officer. Weighing just 96 pounds, she tested positive for Covid-19 and her body was adorned with urine, liquid faeces, maggots, insect bites and severe ulcers.

Lacey was found dead at her parents’ home

The officer had been dispatched to the property after Sheila Fletcher, 64, called police to say her daughter had stopped breathing.

The death was confirmed by East Feliciana Parish Medical Examiner, Dr. Ewell Dewitt Bickham III, ruled a murder, who described the scene as “disgusting”.

He said: “I’ve seen some terrible things in my life but nothing like that. The parents were in the kitchen. They had no explanation. I couldn’t eat for a week and I cried for a week.”

dr Bickham added that evidence indicated Lacey had lain on the couch for at least 12 years.

Clay and Sheila Fletcher’s attorney Steven Moore said the couple “don’t want to relive the pain of losing a child to the media.”

He said: “You’ve been through a lot of heartaches over the years. Anyone who has lost a child knows what it’s like.”

The couple said Lacey relieved herself on the couch or on a towel lying nearby and Sheila Fletcher regularly cleaned her daughter’s wounds.

Mr D’Aquilla said the Fletchers had claimed in 2011 or 2012 that Lacey was unwilling to leave the house and apparently never complained about staying at home.

He said: “We do not treat or neglect animals in this way. If you have an animal in this condition, you must take it to a veterinarian.

“If you are unable to provide care, get help. We want people to know that when caring for someone, you need to be careful.

“It is important that neighbors and the community look out for each other. We hope this never happens again.”
