Part of the A27 near Lewes has been closed following a motorcycle accident

Part of the A27 has been closed in both directions following a motorcycle accident.

Congestion has built up along the road from Kingston and West Firle following the incident between the Southerham roundabout, near Lewes, and the Beddingham roundabout, which has seen motorists face significant delays.

Images on social media said to be from the scene show police watching the incident with a long line of vehicles in traffic.

Police described the incident as “serious” and said the road will be closed “for some time”.

A spokesman for Sussex Roads Police said: “The A27 has been closed in both directions between Beddingham and Southerham roundabouts near Lewes and will be so for some time.

“Please find an alternative route and avoid the area if possible.”

A diversion for westbound traffic is in place along the northbound A22.
