Pascal Gross stunned Old Trafford with his first-half double.
Gross’s goals before the Stretford End were enough to help the Seagulls open this campaign in the form in which they last ended.
Albion fans will be hoping to see their side game, or even better, last season’s ninth place finish.
But Gross said: “I don’t really care, to be fair.
“It’s great for us to have three points but every game in this league is so tough.
“You should be humble, go game after game, train hard this week and have a tough game on Saturday.
“If we can reach 40 points, that’s my goal – then it goes on.”
The German midfielder arrived at the far post to end a pullback from Danny Welbeck and a shot from Solly March that had been blocked by David De Gea.
He said: “I’m always trying to get into those positions.
“Sometimes you get the ball and sometimes you don’t.
“But even then, you have to get them done, and I did that well today.”
