Passengers at Gatwick Airport can expect “sky-high” drop-off charges

GATWICK Airport has one of the most expensive drop-off charges in the UK, according to a new study.

An RAC investigation found that 16 out of 22 major UK airports have introduced or levied charges for dropping passengers in the last three years.

Gatwick came third in a list of the most expensive airports to drop off at, charging £5 for ten minutes.

Stansted led the table with a price of £7 for 15 minutes, followed by Manchester, who charged £5 for just five minutes.

Gatwick Airport, the second busiest in the UK, introduced the cost last year.

Nicholas Lyes, RAC’s head of road transport policy, said limited public transport for some airports and concerns about train strikes mean many passengers are asking friends or family for a ride to the airport.

He said: “Anyone dropping off a loved one at the terminal this summer is going to be stunned by some of those sky-high kiss-and-drop fees.

“For those using the UK’s two busiest airports, the luxury of free drop-off outside the terminal building has been replaced by some rather steep charges.”

Mr Lyes said the increased fees appeared like an attempt by airports to “partially make up for two years of lost revenue” during the pandemic.

He advised drivers to find out about changes before heading to airports and warned them to be aware that many locations use cameras to enforce bans on stopping in certain areas.

“Trying to drop off passengers without paying could result in a hefty fee,” he said.

Gatwick continues to offer passengers free long-stay parking options, with Blue Disability Badge holders exempt from the charge.

Jonathan Pollard, the airport’s chief commercial officer, said: “We are considering how we can better convert and this fee plays a role by encouraging more sustainable trips to the airport with our strong public transport links.

“Our investment in the new airport railway station of EUR 150 million
