Brazil: Passengers try to keep plane door closed in mid-flight

This is the moment passengers appear to be holding a plane door shut after it reportedly blew open mid-flight.

The handrail struck the engine’s propeller after the door opened on the flight from Jordao, in the westernmost Brazilian state of Acre, to Rio Branco, the capital of Acre.

Shocking footage and images appear to show at least two passengers holding the small plane’s door closed on Thursday.

They reportedly continued to hold the door open until the plane landed.

Incredibly, no casualties were reported on board.

Passengers appear remarkably calm despite the danger aboard the plane, which is said to be an Embraer 110 Bandeirante, a Brazilian twin-turboprop light aircraft used on commercial flights and by the military, and usually carries between 15 and 21 passengers can transport.

The images were shared online, where they were quickly picked up by local media.

The flight, reportedly operated by Rio Branco Aerotaxi, took off from Jordao at 12:30 p.m. and landed at 2:00 p.m.

According to an unnamed passenger, the door opened after one of its tethers snapped.

They said another passenger got up and together with a man, as seen in the footage, they joined forces and kept the door closed.

They reportedly held the door down for 20 minutes, with the pilot shutting down the left engine after the door’s handrail struck the propeller.

The unnamed pilot completed the flight with only one engine.

A spokesman for Rio Branco Aerotaxi told local media that the incident was referred to CENIPA, the country’s Aviation Accident Investigation and Prevention Center.

They added that the plane has since been repaired and is now ready to fly again.
