Alison Hammond lashed out at Boris Johnson earlier this morning, branding him ‘out of order’ over the Partygate scandal.
It comes after the Mirror was told on Thursday that the prime minister had been briefed by the Met Police that he would be subject to a limited scrutiny as part of the four-month inquiry.
Mr Johnson escaped further Partygate fines on Thursday after the Metropolitan Police announced they had finally completed their investigation into the lockdown gatherings.
Joining Kate Quilton and Giles Brandreth, Alison and co-host Dermot O’Leary discussed the news on the ITV daytime show.
Kate pointed out that a majority of the public wants Mr Johnson to step down, according to a poll conducted by Ipsos Mori.
“He’s going to ride the wave,” said former Conservative MP Giles. “I’ve sat here over the months and watched people, sometimes foaming at the mouth – these people who don’t like Boris Yes, really don’t like him. They think the whole thing is an absolute scandal.
“They rightly keep saying that – there they were – couldn’t visit dying relatives in hospital and there they were partying in Downing Street – ‘It’s rude, he made the rules, he broke the rules, he should go !’
“But what actually happened is that he paid a fine – a fine – and the police have closed their investigation. There’s going to be this report from an officer where she’s going to flog certain people. She hasn’t named that yet, or been able to name it…then we’ll continue.”
Alison didn’t seem too impressed as she said passionately: “The thing is, it’s not just about the fines, is it? It’s the fact that he celebrated while we weren’t allowed to celebrate, we couldn’t see our family and friends, and he’s there, right under our noses, doing it in front of everyone.
“It is broken!”
“Absolutely,” Kate agreed. “And it’s not just partying. We all know people who have had to say goodbye to their loved ones over Zoom. It’s time for him to go because we’re in that cycle now, if anything happens, it’s always going to come up.”
