It was the most famous prisoner of war camp during the Second World War. Colditz Castle inspired books, a hit BBC series and even a 1970s board game.

During wartime, German authorities hoped the fortress in eastern Germany would become an absolutely safe prison, but hundreds of people tried to escape and more than 30 succeeded.
