Paul Merson has reversed his earlier claims Graham Potter should be considered for that Manchester United Job – and he has also questioned whether the Brighton Chief has recently faltered after starting to believe his own hype.

Potter has built a reputation as one of the premier league most exciting young managers since his appointment by Brighton in the summer of 2019. The 46-year-old has garnered rave reviews for his work on the South Coast, where he has helped the Seagulls develop into one of the top-flight footballers in the top-flight team.

A variety of high profile clubs – including Tottenham – have reportedly considered Potter for managerial positions due to his impressive work in Brighton. And Merson was so impressed with the Seagulls boss’s credentials He urged United to appoint the promoted team only in January.

He previously told Sky Sports: “I’m a big fan of his, I think he plays brilliant football. If I were Man United I would watch Potter, I would watch Potter. I think like her [Brighton] play their football – and they don’t have the quality of Man United players – and they play great football. And if I were Man United I would monitor him. I would think, ‘why not go for him?'”

Unfortunately for Potter, the Seagulls’ form has plummeted dramatically in recent weeks. A run of six straight defeats before Brighton drew 0-0 Norwich on Saturday Brighton saw the table slide – and Potter’s shares plummeted.

And Merson has now retracted his earlier claim that Potter would be well suited for the vacant role at Old Trafford as the arsenal The Playmaker insisted Potter’s recent tinkering had had a negative impact on the Sussex team.

Merson told Sky Sports: “We spoke six weeks ago, I was lyrical, I thought he was an incredible, great manager, could be the next Manchester United manager. Suddenly he starts changing teams and throwing them around, undressing Lamptey when they are up against newcastle and Bissouma doesn’t play in a game, then they take him further.

“He’s starting to believe in his own promotion and I think it’s backfired. It’s all about timings; if they were where Arsenal are now he would mainly be seen as one of the top runners for Man United. Now? No chance.” “

While nothing has reportedly been decided in the race for the vacant position, Ajax boss Erik ten Hag appears to be a step ahead Maurice Pochettino in the last days.
