“And you are amazing in that. With space for you to breathe in a room, not crammed with fanfare, and just let the camera spin in a very real, natural way, it feels pretty Lenny-ish. Is that fair to say?”

“I think maybe so. It was directed by Charlotte Wells, who would go on to be one of those directors we’d all be talking about. I have never met anyone as confident as Charlotte,” Mescal replied.

“The stage guide is written with great confidence. I don’t know about you, but I love acting in that space when you know there’s a kind of stage to it, but the stakes are high. We only have Frankie for about four hours a day.

Frankie Corio, 11, has been hailed as a rising star after her performance, in her first feature film, and Mescal said he was shocked at how good she was. .

“I would say that 95% of it is scripted. For example, the karaoke scene was just to get Frankie comfortable with the idea that an 11-year-old who had never acted before would have to stand in front of the camera and audience and sing ‘Loss My’. Religion’. And she does it brilliantly. During the rehearsal, the cameras didn’t work and Frankie tactfully said, ‘It’s okay. I will record it with my mind camera.’ I remember turning to Charlotte like, ‘That’s the greatest quote of all time.’ Charlotte wrote it then.

Alwyn and Mescal are no strangers to acting out intimate scenes on screen. An intimate coordinator worked with the above actors Normal person and Conversations with friendsand Mescal said it helps the actors feel safe, while at the same time achieving the goals of the production.

“It’s interesting, with that question, because it’s such a hot topic in the industry. I think you’re right that you never want scenes around intimacy to get stale. But in the end they have to feel safe. And I think you can feel safe in many ways, and that’s because of trust,” he said.

The Lír Academy graduate also talks about anxiety and how he deals with it at work. He describes anxiety as a “cursed feeling,” which is that “once you feel like it’s going away, it comes back and hits you like a ton of bricks.”

“But I talked to someone about it. They say, ‘I don’t think it’s going to leave you, because it’s a personality type.’ But for me, it’s about trying to use that anxiety, fear, or fear of failure – reusing that to be like, ‘What I’m doing matters to me.’ It may not be important to everyone, but it was important to me at the time,” he said.

For his part, Alwyn said work-related anxiety has the potential to take away “the joy of doing it,” and that in the future, he’ll “jump in, in a similar way but with less concern, in the same way” the right way”.

“I learned a lot from Frankie, because Frankie had never done it before and just loved acting. I feel like that’s a good instinct to have as an actor — to try and really get to the point when you’re watching someone in action get left out,” Mescal added.

Meanwhile, the couple also agree that when it comes to the projects they look for, “erotic thrillers” are number one.
