Paul O’Grady reveals why he left BBC Radio 2 after 14 years

Paul O’Grady has revealed he’s quitting his BBC Radio 2 show because he’s “not really happy” with the schedule change that has seen him share the location with someone host another program.

The 67-year-old hosted the Sunday Afternoon show for about 14 years before a change caused him to frequently swap with the Rob Beckett comic.

The duo have rotated their shows, each for 13 weeks.

In a video shared on his Instagram ahead of his final show at the station on Sunday, O’Grady explains why he decided to leave.

He said: “The reason I left, because everyone was asking me this, was because I wasn’t really satisfied with the 13 weeks, 13 weeks off business.

“So I did the honorable thing, I honored my contract, announced the departure and now I am leaving.

“Thanks so much and good luck to everyone on Radio 2 and that can go on for a long time.”

The presenter also thanked fans for their kind messages after he made the announcement earlier this month that he was leaving.

He specifically mentioned his producer Malcolm Prince, saying, “I’ve been really lucky in my time to work with some good producers and Malcolm will believe you there.”

O’Grady is the latest host to leave the station, after Steve Wright, also 67, was replaced by Scott Mills, 48, after 24 years with the network.

Vanessa Feltz, 60, is also stepping down from her shows on Radio 2 and BBC Radio London after almost 20 years at the helm.

O’Grady’s final show will feature his regular features, including Lost TV Themes, Thank You Letter of the Week, and a surprise playlist.

BBC confirmed Beckett will return for at least another 13 weeks from August 21.
