PAX East 2022: Talking Final Fantasy 14 raiding with prolific raider Rin Karigani

PAX East was one hell of a weekend and I got to meet and talk to so many people from so many different MMO communities. I was very fortunate to interview one of my favorite FFXIV players, Rin Karigani! We go into great detail about the latest Ultimate Raid in FFXIV, as well as high-level Raids in general!

Anthony Lowry, MMORPG.com: This is Anthony Lowry here with the one, the only one, Rin Karigani. How is PAX treating you today?Rin Karigani: It’s been a busy week. It’s my first convention since Covid and it’s been a blast running around non-stop, meeting people, hanging out, doing a lot of networking, playing video games, walking a lot.

A: We’re going to talk about Dragonsong War because we’ve been waiting for this for a long time. We thought we would get it in Shadowbringers. It turned out to be a little delayed. Now that it’s imminent, what are your and your team’s plans for this new Ultimate raid?

R: Okay, so we’re waiting a long time, a few years in development. The expectations are high. You told us it would be difficult. We practiced a lot, did a lot of fights, did consistency runs, got acquainted with mechanics and made sure we all knew the names. They said it’ll be a little bit easier for static, a little harder for casual players so I assume we’ll have it done by Friday is my hope. If it lasts longer than a week for the world first, then it’s a really good fight. Not that everyone has the time to take time off, but we will work about 16 hours a day, sleep 8 hours, walk again, take breaks throughout the day as we need. Usually try to take breaks. So if you need to go to the bathroom while we’re making charts etc., eat and watch the footage at the same time. We have chosen our comp. Our melee can play all the melee, which is great. We’re actually going with a double caster comp. We will run Summoner/Red Mage.

A: Is this the first time you’ve double cast in your groups? It’s usually double melee, right? I remember seeing yours [Pandaemonium Savage] prog and you were double melee back then.

R: Well, it’s a new team. This time in a completely new team. But we had the opportunity to double melee. However, when you’re pugging something for the first time, it’s easier to buy time as a ranged player than it is in melee.

A: That is very trueR: Strategies can be a bit looser without sacrificing damage in addition to that [resurrection] Potential. And that’s not to say you can wear anything with dead bodies. We have to be clean when we kill it. But there could be mechanics or our healers go under. We’ll be directing Dark Knight and probably Warrior. Lots of healing potential and lots of shield potential. New Living Dead is awesome and Dark Knight does a lot of damage. We draw Machinist for our ranged simply because our ranged doesn’t care about Bard and he’s more knowledgeable about Machinist, which also helps when you have a short rage trigger against an enemy. Machinist has a harder time popping, and Bard relies on DoTs, so her damage will be slightly lower. And we actually make the choice to become white mage and sage, so lots of potential for burst healing.

A: Yes, that’s a lot of changes with this new group! watch yours [Pandaemonium] prog, I believe your healers were scholars and [Astrologian]

R: Yes, it was. And in the end it was crucial for P3S.

A: Jump to something that’s a little off, tank balance in general, because you’ve been very good at tanking for years. Dark Knight has gotten pretty big buffs in general, with Living Dead being the biggest. It changed the tank balance quite a bit in general. Will your choice of Dark Knight be directly impacted by this change?

R: You would think so, but it does the most damage!A: That is very true!

R: Like you said, I play all four tanks pretty well. So when it matters. I just bring what does the most damage, and normally I would go for Gunbreaker. But my co-tank doesn’t play Dark Knight. He plays either Gunbreaker or Warrior. Living Dead opens up a lot of potential for prog though, because if our healers go down or whatever, we can also strategically allow Living Dead to proc. For example, if I’m already low level and could survive a tank buster or auto attack, but we choose to allow my Living Dead proc, I can then heal myself to full HP. So that they can help someone else while I can heal myself. Blood Weapon Change is really good. Now we can AOE and still use our full potential. [The Blackest Night] is extraordinary, and the fact that Oblation contains two charges in addition to TBN~. Many people look at oblation as a weakness. I see it as a strength. Because Dark Knight can cover three different targets at the same time.

A: You talked about what tools Dark Knight can bring, and that’s kind of an optimization in itself, especially during the prog. You understand that these tools can be good here, even if you don’t fully understand what fights you’re dealing with will be confronted. When progressing at a high level, you want to see as much as possible on each move. Optimization isn’t just about maximizing damage, it’s about whatever you need at that point. How do you go about figuring out these tweaks, both from a personal and team perspective?R: I would say when it comes to my team it’s easy to do damage. That’s the bare minimum. You should know your rotation. Survivability and progression become the next best thing. Having people who can quickly see what’s going on, how to deal with it. Then all eight players must be consistent and be able to execute a plan. So having tools available and knowing how to distribute them. For example, I can use my 2 minute cooldown here, then you use your 90 [second cooldown], and the next time something happens my two minutes are back. Or if not, you’re going backwards now. You use the 90 first, then the two minutes, and then the 90 is up again. Being able to rearrange cooldowns is important. A lot of this sounds very technical and requires a lot of thought, but we’ve practiced a lot, so we’re all working together. So we already have these contingencies under control. We imagine mock situations where we already have our spread positions or how we will move together as groups, as roles, where the arena cuts us off. Just a lot of planning, so when we finally get to it, we don’t have to sit down and ask, “How do we solve this?”? We say “Okay, Scenario ‘D’. Now we pull up scenario D and run it, or now we have situation five, now we run that one. It’s just about being prepared for situations already and hopefully not hitting a wall.

A: To wrap it up, we’ve been talking a lot of technical talk and a lot of progression, and there’s a lot of new players and you’ve been raiding with players everywhere. I’ve raided with you a few times, and you’ve helped me feel like I can actually do it. Both you and LlamaTodd opened the door to Savage raids for me. What would you say to players like me who are afraid to go in or who don’t have that environment?

R: I think players of any level could be very nervous about getting into Savage and if you don’t want to, that’s fine. Nobody should feel pressured. However, if you want to do it, there will always be someone out there and a group to play with. It may take a while because it’s easier said than done. As you said, LlamaToss and I have been helping people all along, and there are many more people out there who don’t vape but are willing to help. You have a lot of people who are willing to put their foot forward, take a risk, and although it can be very stressful and nerve wracking. Play tanks, play healers [is] much harder than DPS because if you screw it up everyone will see it right away. I would say just do it. you will make mistakes People will get upset, others won’t. you will find friends There are many players in Final Fantasy XIV. So do your best, I believe in you and if I can do it, I know you can too!
