Payment processor Opayo is investigating errors in some card transactions in Irish supermarkets


Opayo, the payment processor formerly known as Sage Pay, has confirmed that it is investigating an issue affecting card payment transactions.

There is no word today that a disruption at Opayo has affected card payments at a number of Irish supermarkets and other retailers.

Opayo, which is owned by Elavon, said it “encountered an issue” today that impacted how transactions are processed.

“Sorry for the disruption to our service, we encountered an issue that has impacted transaction processing. Please check our system monitor for updates on this,” Opayo said in a post on Twitter.

“We are currently having an issue where some transactions are not being processed successfully. Our investigations are ongoing to resolve the issue.”

A spokesperson for Elavon added, “We are currently experiencing a service disruption that has impacted Opayo transactions. Our technical teams are still working to resolve this issue as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and will post updates as more information becomes available.”

The Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) confirmed it is investigating whether there is a problem as a number of card machines across the country are out.

A spokesman for BPFI said “members are investigating if there is a problem and what the impact is.”

“From our understanding, it does not appear to be a widespread issue – but it is being investigated.”

It comes as a number of people shared their frustration online tonight at seeing their card payments not being accepted online.

“Why are all the card machines down everywhere???” wrote one user.

While another person wrote: “Is there a problem with @SuperValuIRL payments online…can’t let my order go through and came across 2 stores today that the card machines are down…Surprised it’s an outage?”

A user shared an image of a poster on display at a Supervalu store in Dublin today. The poster read: “We are only accepting cash payments today, sorry for the inconvenience caused.” has contacted Supervalu and is awaiting a response.
